The Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) extended the ESI Scheme fully to all notified revenue districts across India, removing historical piecemeal municipal restrictions under the ESI Act, 1948.
- Wage limit for ESI coverage: ₹21,000 per month (₹25,000 for persons with disabilities).
- Contribution rates: Employer 3.25% of wages, Employee 0.75% of wages (total 4.00%). Employees earning average daily wage up to ₹176 are exempt from paying employee contribution.
- Key benefits under § 46: Sickness benefit, Maternity benefit (26 weeks full wage), Disablement benefit (temporary/permanent), Dependants benefit, Medical benefit, and Funeral expenses (up to ₹15,000).
- Administered by a tripartite Body with Central/State Governments, employers, employees, and medical profession representatives.
